Aid to Africa

As Africa prepares to host the football World Cup for the first time, the Financial Times launches a series examining whether Africa is finally turning the corner. In the following graphic, we examine the influence of aid on the continent and the relative success of the recipient countries over the last 30 years.

The first tab, which shows aid as a percentage of government expenditures, tracks the relative importance of aid to the country in terms of government spending over the course of the last 30 years. This figure explains how big of an emphasis officials place on assisting the public.

The second tab examines gross domestic product growth rates for the continent over time, which shows the growth and relative success over the last 30 years. The brown circles indicate negative GDP growth, while the blue circles indicate positive growth.
