A day at the fair

The lacklustre US economy is dominating concerns as Congressional elections approach in November. The Midwest heartland of Iowa, however, is a bright spot on another otherwise bleak economic landscape.

A guarded optimism was evident at the Iowa state fair in Des Moines this week, the highlight of the agricultural calendar, where more than 1m people turned out to eat local delicacies such as corndogs and deep-fried Oreo cookies.
