Although China is the world’s largest miner of rare earths – the 17 elements critical for making electronics – Beijing is in the midst of a crackdown on illegal miners, which, if successful, will reduce their output. Leslie Hook visits the small hillside mines of Jiangxi province, where rare earth miners say they fear being arrested if they go back to work.
