Celebrated oud player returns to Iraq

The celebrated oud player Naseer Shamma returned to Iraq after a 19-year absence earlier this year.

The musician, who fled Saddam Hussein’s regime in the early 1990s, spent the intervening years in Tunisia and Egypt. His homecoming brings hope of an artistic renaissance in Iraq.
