Bill Gates has stepped down from his chairmanship at Microsoft after more than 30 years in the role.

The software company also appointed Satya Nadella, president of its cloud computing and enterprise business, as its new chief executive. Mr Nadella takes over from Steve Ballmer, who had been chief executive since 2000.

Mr Gates will remain an important figure at Microsoft – he aims to spend a third of his time at the company helping Mr Nadella as a technology adviser.

Microsoft lost roughly 40 per cent of its market value during Mr Ballmer’s tenure.

The company’s new management will hope to re-establish Microsoft as a technology leader. As Mr Nadella wrote in his first email to employees: “We must zero in on what Microsoft can uniquely contribute to the world. The opportunity ahead will require us to reimagine a lot of what we have done in the past for a mobile and cloud-first world, and do new things.”
