More than 130 people were reported to have been killed when two powerful bombs exploded within yards of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto as she travelled in a convoy through Karachi.

Syed Kamal Shah, interior ministry secretary, said 133 people had been killed and 290 wounded.

Ms Bhutto, who had returned home from eight years in exile, and senior leaders of her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) narrowly escaped death, protected by her heavily armoured vehicle. The attack turned the earlier carnival atmosphere of the procession into one of horror.
