After a 12-day movie marathon in the south of France, the Cannes Film Festival came to a close this weekend. A gritty Romanian movie - 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days - set towards the end of the communist era won top honours: the Palme d’Or.

Cannes has always been among the more glamorous events on the movie calendar. This year, the festival celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The event attracts more international distributors, buyers and members of the media than any other film festival and has become a critical launch pad for films Hollywood studios hope will come global blockbusters.
