Today’s EU foreign ministers meeting to discuss the possible relaxing of sanctions against Myanmar is the latest sign of diplomatic relations easing between the desperately poor south east Asian state and the west.

As relations improve, and investors and businesses eye up opportunities, its worth remembering just how poor Myanmar is compared to its neighbours.

In the charts below you can see how Myanmar compares to its neighbours in terms of wealth as well as its current imports and exports. The jump in FDI over recent years is largely due to investment from China. In the FDI chart the figure for 2011 is an estimate; figures for 2012-16 are forecasts.
