Jonathan Birchall travels to Hemet, where Tesco has opened its Fresh & Easy Neighbourhood Market.
The store, opened late last week, will be followed by five more in southern California, with subsequent openings in Las Vegas and Phoenix, and scores more to follow next year.
Tesco has said it will invest at least $250m a year in its initial move into the US.
