Tensions between Argentina and the UK over the status of the Falkland Islands are running high as Buenos Aires prepares to lodge a formal protest with the UN Security Council and General Assembly after Britain dispatched HMS Dauntless to the islands.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence has said the deployment of the Type 45 destroyer to the islands, which Argentina refers to as Las Malvinas, was a routine operation.

The ratcheting up of tension comes ahead of the 30th anniversary on April 2 of the island’s invasion by Argentina’s military junta that triggered a three-month war with Britain in 1982.

This interactive graphic explores the economic and political set-up of the Falkland Islands, and particularly the status of the ongoing oil and gas exploration around the island’s waters.
