Chuck Prince on Sunday resigned as chairman and chief executive of Citigroup after four years of turbulent reign at the world’s largest financial services institution.

Citi suffered a series of regulatory setbacks in Mr Prince’s earlier years in office and has come under increasing criticism over its lax ethical standards, sluggish growth, and spiralling costs. The bank’s share price has underperformed the broader market and many of its rivals.

But the last blow came when the financial impact of the global credit market squeeze has become clearer. The bank revealed on Sunday that it was facing between $8bn and $11bn of further losses on its holdings of mortgage-related securities, a month after it said it suffered $6bn of write-downs and losses in the third quarter. Mr Prince said on Sunday that in the light of the losses stepping down was “the only honourable course”.

Our interactive timeline charts the highs and lows of Mr Prince’s reign at Citi.
