Established in1843, the News of the World was the paper that first launched Rupert Murdoch onto the UK media stage when he acquired it in 1969 after a fierce bidding war with Robert Maxwell.

Its last issue will be on Sunday, July 10th, after James Murdoch, his son, announced its closure in an attempt to draw a line under the phone hacking scandal that has dogged the tabloid.

This slideshow looks back at key moments in the history of the paper.
