Millions of French public sector workers went on strike on Tuesday to demand wage increases and protest against President Nicolas Sarkozy’s plans to slim down the government bureaucracy.

The one-day stoppage coincides with the seventh day of a rolling strike by transport workers against proposed pension cuts, which has caused widespread travel disruption in Paris and across the country.
